How to Remove Scrub Stains: A Quick Guide for Healthcare Heroes

In the world of healthcare, stains are almost a badge of honor. Whether it's coffee from a much-needed caffeine boost or something less glamorous from a long shift, your scrubs go through a lot. Luckily, with the right tips and tricks, you can keep your scrubs looking fresh and professional.

1. Act Fast

The sooner you treat a stain, the better. As soon as you notice the stain, blot (don’t rub!) it with cold water or a damp cloth to prevent it from setting.

2. Know Your Stain Type

Different stains require different approaches:

  • Protein-based stains (blood, sweat): Soak in cold water. Avoid hot water—it can set the stain. Use an enzymatic cleaner or hydrogen peroxide for stubborn blood stains.

  • Oil-based stains (lotions, ointments): Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch to absorb the oil, let sit for 10–15 minutes, then brush it off before washing.

  • Ink or pen marks: Dab with rubbing alcohol using a cotton ball before tossing in the wash.

  • Food and drink stains: Pre-treat with a stain remover spray or a mix of vinegar and dish soap.

3. Pre-Treat Before Washing

Apply a stain remover or a paste of baking soda and water directly to the stained area. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing.

4. Wash with Care

Always check the care label first. Use cold or warm water and a gentle detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, as they may lock in certain stains.

5. Air Dry First

After washing, air dry your scrubs instead of using a dryer. Heat can set any remaining stain. Once dry, check if the stain is gone—if not, repeat the steps before drying again.
